1. Tent and sleeping gear

The most important camping essentials for women are, of course, a place to sleep and sleeping gear.

Tent

A lightweight, waterproof tent is perfect for carrying, especially for women's solo travelling. A 3m bell tent is the ideal size as it can fit one or two people comfortably, whilst still being easy to manage and carry to and from the site. Features like mesh panels and breathable fabrics like our polycotton are ideal for ventilation and weather resistance.

Sleeping bag

Women have different body temperatures than men and are often colder sleepers, so it’s best to invest in a sleeping bag specifically designed for women. This will ensure you retain heat and can sleep comfortably even in cold weather.

Air beds and bedding

Studies have shown that it’s actually harder for women to fall and stay asleep compared to men, which is why it’s so important to have those extra nighttime comforts on your camping trip. The right beds and bedding are crucial for getting a good night’s sleep, so a quality air mattress is a must-have on your women’s camping list. We’d recommend a foam air mattress as they offer more support and encounter fewer issues with deflating.

2. Clothing

Layering is essential when out camping and will allow you to adapt to the weather as and when you need to.

Base Layers

Start with your basic base layers, like a long or short-sleeved tee and leggings for comfort. Of course, wear your standard underwear under this, but we’d recommend a sports bra or non-underwire bra for maximum comfort on your adventures. Moisture-wicking materials for your base layers will help regulate your temperature and prevent excess sweating, too.

Insulating layers

Pack a fleece or jumper to throw on in the morning or evening when the temperatures drop, and add some fluffy socks to your pack for lounging. These are especially good when you’re not wearing shoes in the tent and help to protect your feet.

Jackets

A waterproof and windproof jacket is the safest bet for camping. This will keep you warm and dry should any unexpected showers occur. You can also find a range of outdoor jackets in fashionable patterns and styles, so you don’t have to sacrifice style while staying protected.

Footwear

We know they’re ugly, but the best shoes for the job really are a pair of reliable hiking boots. These will help support your feet and ankles for long days of walking or partying and are ideal for wet, windy British weather. For casual wear around the campsite, you can bring some sliders or trainers to give your feet a break from more heavy-duty footwear.

3. Essential toiletries for women

Menstrual Supplies

Periods always seem to hit at the most inconvenient times, and a camping trip can quickly become a disaster if you’re not prepared. Always bring a kit with tampons, pads or period underwear and refreshing wipes, even if you’re not due on. Also, ensure that you’re disposing of any packaging correctly and following the countryside code.

Toilet Solutions

Always bring your own supply of toilet paper, as you never know if toilet facilities will be stocked up. A Shewee is also a great alternative when toilets are not available. If you’re out wild camping, you should also bring a trowel so you can dig a dedicated hole to do your business.

Standard toiletries

As with any trip, you’ll want to make sure you have the general essential toiletries, including:

  • Soap or body wash

  • Shampoo and conditioner

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Deodorant

  • Flannel or microfiber cloth

  • Facewash

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Hairbands

Skincare

One of the biggest camping essentials for women is skincare. We all know how tempting it is to skip the skincare routine and crash out after a day of fun, but missing a few days is all it takes to trigger flare-ups and clogged pores. Always bring your standard skincare with you and some high SPF to protect you since you’ll be outdoors for long periods. Bug repellent and bite balm will also come in handy should you fall victim to pesky bites.

4. Cooking utensils and food

A good meal is the key to keeping you fuelled and full for a long day of adventures. Whether you’re alone or with friends, a proper meal can make all the difference.

  • Portable Stove: If you’re on a solo trip, a portable gas stove will suffice, but if you’re out adventuring with friends, a portable wood-burning stove can help you whip up meals for the whole group in no time.

  • Fuel and Lighter/Matches: Make sure you have plenty of spare matches and a fire lighter.

  • Crockery and cooking utensils: A multipurpose pot or pan, and a set of cutlery are essential. A bowl and a plate are also needed.

  • Cooler: If you’re enjoying a few drinks or bringing fresh produce, a cooler will keep your food fresh for longer.

  • Bottled water: Always ensure you are well stocked up on water. Even if there is drinking water available, this will make things easier and quicker if you’re in a pinch for time or supplies at your site run low.

  • Dried goods: Some breakfast bars, dried fruit and snacks are always great to have on hand for a quick burst of energy.

5. Safety and navigation essentials

Safety is by far the number one most important thing to consider as a female camper, especially if you’re camping solo. Not only do you need to stay alert and keep yourself and your belongings safe, but you also need the right equipment should you find yourself injured.

First Aid

Always bring a well-stocked kit with plasters, bandages, antiseptic wipes and painkillers. Blister pads are also a lifesaver after long walks. Your regular medication should also be stored in your first aid kit.

Navigation Tools

Manual tools like a map and a compass are always helpful in areas with low signal, but you should always keep a device with your GPS location on hand. If you’re heading off as a group of women or on a solo trip, share your location with friends or family so they know where you are should anything happen or if you need medical attention.

Other Security Tools

A tent alarm or a tent lock is a great way to protect your space and deter would-be thieves, especially at busy campsites like festivals. If you’re camping alone, a whistle or personal safety alarm can help alert others that you need assistance.

Take a look at our blog on how to lock a tent for the right way to secure your tent and other ways to stay safe.

6. Bags

One thing many people forget is that you need different bags for storage as well as the right bag to carry all your gear. A large camping bag or hiking rucksack should carry all your essentials, like clothing and your sleeping bag. You’ll also need to carry your tent, which should come in its own dedicated bag.

If you’ve got a long walk to your camp, this can get tiring, which is why we recommend using a camping trolley. With this, you can easily take the weight of different gear off your back, and it can also double up as storage throughout your stay.

You’ll also want to bring a small bag when you’re out adventuring, like a bumbag for all your essentials or a small drawstring bag.

7. Other camping essentials for women

Along with the obvious essentials like clothing and shelter, there are a few other bits and bobs that people may not consider but are equally important items for your camping list.

Electronics

Mobile phones and chargers, or portable chargers if you’re going off-grid. If you’re off glamping, you may want to indulge and bring your Kindle or a gaming device for a relaxing weekend away.

Furniture

For nights around the fire or to enjoy a proper sit-down meal, you’ll need to bring some tables and seating. Whether that’s a standard camping chair or something fancier like a deck chair and dining table, the right furnishings create an inviting space to unwind in the morning and evenings.

Soft furnishings

Sometimes you want to make your space feel more homely, and adding little touches like bunting and fairy lights can be a simple way. Soft furnishings can make your tent feel more inviting for your guests and can also help to make your trip feel less basic.

Enjoy women’s camping without compromise

Camping allows you to embrace the outdoors and explore new and exciting places, and with the right gear, you’ll be able to enjoy your journeys in confidence and comfort.
