What is Hot Tent Camping?

As the nights grow longer and the cold creeps in, hot tent camping can be a saving grace for all-seasons travel. Making sure you’re prepared for rain, sleet or snow might not sound fun - but the joy of a tent stove and a fire retardant tent means you’re in for a comfortable night’s sleep, whatever the weather.

Whether you’re going off on a wild adventure or staying close to home for the ultimate glamping experience, we’re here to help.

In this guide, the experts here at Boutique Camping are here to answer ‘what is a hot tent’, whether they’re worth the investment - and show you some of the best in our collection.

What is a hot tent?

Essentially, a hot tent is a fire-retardant tent. That means that you can use a stove or even a pizza oven inside - which really comes in handy during the colder months!

However, that means that there are a number of things to prepare before you get out there, especially if you’re dealing with an open flame or kindling. There are a number of things to keep in mind when planning the camping in a hot tent and not all tents are suitable for making a fire, either in a stove or as an open fire.

So, what is hot tent camping?

So if a hot tent is made with fire-retardant material, then hot tent camping is all about making the most of your toasty stove. Picture this: you’ve had a busy day, braving the cold and stuck in wet clothes. With hot tent camping, you can bed down - while drying your socks - and gather round a crackling fire, enjoying stories and s'mores with your friends and family.

Hot tenting is perfect for those who are off to hike in a cold snap, camp at higher elevations or go with friends who are hunting.

Do they work?

Hot tents are great for keeping warm - but they do need to be properly set-up first.

That includes ensuring your tent is properly ventilated, so you can reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and get enough air to circulate the heat properly. To do this, you need to properly vent your stove or oven. This is when you create an opening in the fabric wall of the tent to serve as a chimney - so smoke can safely escape.

Thirdly, it is important that the chimney is insulated, so that the hot pipe does not touch the tent fabric at the chimney opening.

As a fire-retardant fabric, our 320gsm cotton is a go-to for our hot tent campers. These 100% natural fibres adapt to climates, encouraging maximum breathability, durability and warmth wherever adventuring, complete with an integrated hole for ventilation.

Are hot tents worth it?

If you’re looking to camp comfortably in even the coldest climates, hot tents are more than worth it.

Although the tent and various heating accessories are, admittedly, an investment, hot tent camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors without being held back by the weather. With hot tents, you’re always guaranteed a toasty place to come back to - so gone are the days of changing out of wet clothes in a freezing tent.

Plus, hot tents are usually much bigger than standard tents. That means you can use the extra space designed for a wood stove - and then some - to spread out, bring another friend and relax in comfort.

It also means there’s no need to lug an extra propane stove, because your wood-burner is great to cook on. From marshmallows to hot water for tea, it’s the perfect thing to bring for campfire cooking under the stars.
